Yes, OSSBarcamp is a wrap! At least for now. Thanks to all those who came, took part, gave talks and most of all interacted with everyone there.

It was a great to see so many enthusiastic people there and it does show me that there is a need for an outlet here in Ireland for Open Source events. There are so many conferences, events in Europe but it’s nice to have one in our own back-garden, one that is accessible to all and does not cost some ridiculous price to go to.

The topics varied, which was great as there was hopefully a topic to suit everyone, and if there wasn’t maybe next time you’ll give a talk. Some of the speakers have very nicely put links to their presentations here on the site so if you missed them you can see.

I’d like to thank DIT, especially Deidre Lawless for all of her help in running the event, she’s great! Echolibre who came on board when I didn’t even have a date or a venue, it’s great to see that much enthusiasm and support. Thanks folks!

With all of the comments and feed back I’ve received since the event, I’m pretty happy with the way things went, it was my first large event I’ve ran outside of college on my own whim, luckily I had the help from Jaime and James. Who both came on board when I mentioned I had an idea for a Barcamp. Kudos!

Clearly I’m bonkers but I’ve decided to run another Barcamp, date to be confirmed but I’m thinking late August, early September. Thoughts…..

Laura

Do not run off after the event!! Please! We do want to meet you all! The last Talk finish at 4:30pm and we are heading to Shine, which is close by on Wexford street around from DIT, where at 6pm we will have some nibbles laid out. We have the top floor of the bar reserved for the evening, so no crowding and queues for the bar and would be great to chat to people after the event and you can meet the speakers and ask them questions if you didn’t get a chance throughout the day.

Wow, firstly thanks to all those who have signed up to give a talk. I cannot get over how quickly the slots filled up so fast. They are now all full. So if your name is on the schedule and in the timetable, you_are_talking. Thanks to all those who have since suggested other talk, but unfortunately we are bound by time and space.

We are running 3 streams and I think any more in one day would mean talks may get over looked. Just a reminder. Talks are 40 mins, 15 mins Q&A and a 5 min break. Regarding presentation tools, you can use slides if you like, or just talk or demo it’s entirely up to you.

Now we have a full schedule, we need to make sure everyone knows that you’re talking, please blog, podcast, twitter it and let as many people know what a great day it is. Who knows if OssBarcamp is a success I may run another……

Well thanks to the great efforts of Jaime, we now have the schedule page up and running. I know it’s usual in barcamps to do most of this stuff on the day, but this is me, and those who know me, know I like to have a good idea how things will pan out so I can change and fix things if needed.

So what do you need to do. Well we have OpenID installed so you can log in using it. We have 3 rooms and have set aside 2 lightning talks sessions.

So a few basics:
Talks 40 minutes long, 15 minutes Q&A and 5 minutes to move rooms or get some fresh air and mingle.
Lightning talks Max 10 minutes and 5 minutes Q&A. For those not familiar with them, Maybe you’ve never given a talk before, and you’d like to start small. For a Lightning Talk, you don’t need to make slides, and if you do decide to make slides, you only need to make three.

We encourage everyone to take part, give a talk, participate in a discussion group, just ask questions, you don’t need to be developer, sysadmin, Tech expert or a whizz using Open Source alternatives, come along and ask questions, learn about alternatives and most importantly enjoy the day.

I just updated the lists on the attendees (33 people!), speakers, (atleast 12 awesome talks) and suggest a topic page. Laura has put a map and some more information on the about page too.

As the event is getting closer I’ve started to think about what I’ll do at OSS Bar Camp on Saturday March 28th. I’ve decided I’ll give a talk during the main event and I’ll ofcourse come along to the geek girl day (Same place, same day) as well. My talk will be about Git which I only have started reading about so far, but would like to learn more over the next two months. So I’ve set a goal to introduce you all to Git at the event as my presentation.

I wonder if any one else would like to speak at this event but haven’t yet been able come up with anything to speak about. If this is the case for you I’d suggest first looking at the speakers page and see what people are already going to talk about. If this hasn’t inspired you go to the suggested topics page and maybe there will be something you know about that others have a desire to hear.

I’d like to attend a talk on how to get more involved in open source myself, I’d like to see the path one of you took to get involved with the projects you work on. From the suggest a topic page I see a trend, people want to learn how Open Source is used in Ireland. Is your business running on open source? can you come along and share some of your experiences? Have you built some software that you can present and share? What are you working on? What do you contribute to?

Finally if you are a technologist and just want really awesome talks, spread the word about OSS Bar Camp to your friends, colleagues and families, encourage awesome people you know to come along and give a presentation. Let the people that have already signed up as speakers know you’re interested in what they have to say as well! I know I’m looking forward to all of them.
