We thought we’d try something different this time. An easier way for us to keep an eye on numbers, the event is still very much free, and while you don’t need the ticket to enter the event it’s more a case of keeping an eye on numbers as the venue is slightly smaller than the previous venue.

LPI EXAMS

Last year we offered people the chance t do the LPI exams thanks to Howe Systems, it had a great uptake and once again they have very kindly offered to run them again during the day at OSSBarcamp.

Howe Systems are pleased to announce the availability of LPI exams at the forthcoming OSSBarcamp. These will be
offered at a 50% saving of £ 75 (invoiced through LinuxIT, England).

Prior registration is necessary as demand for exams could be high. To register and secure a place contact howesystem as they will be looking after this and do need to know who will be attending.

Howe systems will hold an LPIC-1 Exam Cram for candidates on the day if there is sufficient interest. This will take place prior to the exams and will cost €70.

We’re back and with some news

We’re back again! Site has had a bit of a tidy up thanks to James Larkin for his work, not sure how I’d manage without him. Also this year sadly Jaime Hemmett won’t be around as she’s moved back to Australia. Without her last year I’d never have been able to run OSSBarcamp. When I told her about my idea she jumped on board so will miss her this year.

We have a date, a date you don’t want to miss. Saturday 17th April 2010. We have a new venue this time, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank DIT and Deirdre Lawless for their help in running the previous events. Without them we’d never have gotten off our feet. Equally without our past sponsors of Echolibre and Open Source Solutions Centre we’d not have gotten ourselves off the ground.

Saturday 17th April event will be held at the IBM offices located in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. We hope to run this event a bit more laid back then previous events, with more ad hoc talks, more lightening sessions, and people volunteering on the day! Also we shall be running the LPI exams again on the day.

Ossbarcamp 2010 Date

I do have plans to run another OSSBarcamp in 2010. I need to A) Find a suitable venue – easy access, and good wifi are the criteria. B) A suitable date.

With A) being worked on and I’m looking at Dublin again, for the time being, but also I would like to run one in Northern Ireland and will consider other locations if you can point me in the right direction.

I need your help to help me pick a date, as lets be honest, I’ll be there no matter what. I’ve done up a quick poll that if you could select a suitable date that would as I’d like as many people as possible to come to these events. I’d also like to open the invitation to as many groups to come and take part in the day. If you’ve special requirements let me know and I’ll do my best to accommodate you.

OSSBarcamp Wrap Up

Well sadly the event is now over. It was so awesome, thanks for coming!. There were over 100 people there throughout the day. I think it’s such an amazing event with fantastic speakers and so much fun catching up with some of the most passionate Open Source people in the country. If you have any photos, please put a link to them in the comments so we can all go check them out.

Thanks again to all the speakers for volunteering and doing such a great job. Could you please put up your slides and leave a link in the comments so that we can read what happened in the talks we missed.

There’s another OSSBarcamp planned for April, but not in Dublin this time. I think a few more are in the works for outside of Dublin as well.

OSSBarcamp – What to bring

Hi!

So we’re really getting close now with just over a day until the big event. Apparenlty there’s room for some cars out the front and more parking if you drive in through the campus to behind the buildings.

There’s going to be wireless so you can bring your fancy phone or laptops along.

You can bring a packed lunch or there’s shops on wexford street, I think there’s a Subway and a Quiznos, maybe some cafes and restaurants. We have a 45 minute break there. Please comment if you know any more food places in the area.

ALSO Bring a friend, someone you’ve always wanted to introduce to free software. They’ll learn so much and want to get their hands dirty on a keyboard asap.

For dinner we’ll all be over at Solas, where the bbq will be sizzing away some goodies. There’s a special deal for 3 Euros for the BBQ. And there’s some drink deals as well, find out more on the night!

1 week to go to OSSBarcamp

A couple of weeks ago I did an interview with Declan McGrath for his Code Mongrel podcast. There are Oggs and Mp3 versions available on Code Mongrel. I tried to discuss some of the cool talks we have coming up on the schedule. I’m looking forward to seeing Jan Lennart talk about Couch DB. I missed seeing him at GUADEC. Then there’s so much on that I’ll probably struggle to pick what’s best for each slot after that.

There’s just over a week to go until the OSSBarcamp now! Can you believe it? It’s going to be great, over 80 people have signed up. If you haven’t done so yourself yet go to the registration page. You can come along at any time on the day. There’s going to be Linux Professional Institute (LPI) exams too which some people are studying for and will complete on the day and an LPI exam cram session before hand.

After the event the bar Solas is booked from 4:30 so stick around and come for a pint and some BBQ food. More info on Solas.

So I guess I’ll see you there on September Saturday 19th.

Post Event Refreshments – Solas

Please don’t run away after the event finishes up. We have some food laid on afterwards down at Solas and it’ll give you a chance to meet and chat to people that you may not have seen during the day. Discussing some of the talks and meeting some of the speakers.

The event finishes at 16:30 sharp and then we’re headed down to Solas, which if you follow the line of people leaving is only a 6 minute walk. We have laid on a BBQ, and it’ll only cost you €3, and from 16:30 – 18:30 there will be some discounted drinks during these hours, with some food later on for those who want to stick around. We have upstairs cornerd off also during this time and we will be hanging out here for the evening as the bar doesn’t close till 3am!

LPIC-1 Exam Cram

LPIC-1 Exam Cram:

So it seems there is a large interest in the LPI exams and Howe systems have said they are going to run a intensive cram course in the morning before the exam take place to help folks out.

The exam cram will give candidates who have studied for LPIC-1 (LPI 101 and LPI 102) an extra edge in the exam itself. It will guide candidates through questions that are normally problematic and could make the difference between a near pass and a pass mark.Duration 3 hours. Cost €70.

The price is heavily discounted and is aimed at the DIY candidates at OSSBARCAMP. The cost of the exam cram can be discounted by means of a voucher against future courses with Howe Systems.

LPI Exam Information

Howe Systems announce 50% saving on LPI Exams Howe Systems are please to announce that they will be offering LPI Exams at the forthcoming OSSBARCAMP on the 19th of September. The exams are offered subject to availability, so early registration is vital.
Exams are being offered at £ 75 for LPI 101, 102, 201 or 202.

To place an order e-mail: info@lpi-uk.org, with: Name, Contact Number, Exam Required and preference for Morning or Afternoon Exam. You will then be then contacted prior to the 19 of September to confirm your place and requesting your credit card number.
