Personally id like a short talk on program development. At the moment I use java for little apps in ubuntu but id like to develop programs for ubuntu particular but I dont have a clue where to start. So for a talk id like info on preferred languages, if there are any good integrated development environments that I can use …etc. I dont think this idea would be very interesting for the non-programmers going though.

I just joined the attendees list. I’m very interested into a discussion on how open source technology can help everyone out there build a horizontally scalable platform for a high trafficked website.

I believe the subject is what everyone needs to understand and apply to their web apps. Too many apps are being launched, but the as the traffic grows, the user experience is getting worse: slower responding sites, down to failing requests.

    How about
*What is OSS for you?* as a topic, I mean this is use, suport, development, how to do business with it (if thats a model that interest you), expected documentation, etc.
As a developer using a lot of OS frameworks(Monorail, ActiveREcord from castleproject.org, Windsor, jQuery and other JS frameworks , GWT, and now Spring), I love it.
I love the fact that i can read the code and learn from it, I love the fact that there is heavy involvement in the comunity however i dont love the fact that documentation in some projects is mostly not there or out of synch however I can understand why.
I also love the fact that even if just use it on and of, linux is there and there are all of the different distros, etc.
    Cheers

Documentation is something that’s often mentioned Andrea, if you find the documentation for software you use regularly or have benefited from using is not up to scratch the beauty of OSS is that you can change it and update the documentation yourself.

It’s a nice way to give something back and it’s something everyone can do even if it’s just correcting some spelling errors and I’m sure the developers would be very grateful for your contribution

I think a software development talk would be a good one Shane. Developing on Ubuntu is a great experience. I find Netbeans good for doing Ruby stuff and it’s got a special Ruby-tailored build for it but there’s also the likes of Eclipse and even Vi/Emacs still have there place!

Just on the issue of developing for Ubuntu there’s nice lists of TODOs and WEEKLY TODOs at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam .Maybe one of your favourite apps will be listed there and you can put a patch in!

  6. Marcin Lasota

My kind of question would be like this: is the whole idea of an open source important for u and if so – why? How do u benefit from os software, have u ever contributed to any os project?

  7. Rory Browne

I’d like a talk on Kernel development – this would probably for practical reasons be along the lines of writing basic linux modules, but an introduction to Hurd, Minix, the *BSD kernels would be nice.

  8. Stella Power

I’d like to offer to do a talk on the open-source content management system, Drupal, if anyone’s interested. We had a great turnout at the Drupal Ireland event in DIT last month, so I think it’s something people would be interested in. Let me know what you think.

    Cheers,
    Stella

  9. forbairt

Personally Stella, I’d love a talk on Drupal so I’d say go for it (and you’ll be added to the speakers list)

  10. Fintan

If there is any interest in the Flex SDK I could give an introduction to developing with Flex.

  11. forbairt

:D Personally haven’t gotten to play with Flex yet so I’d love a talk on it :D

(Dear god I’ve yet to hear a topic I don’t want to hear about I may be drooling all day at this thing) :D

  12. admin

@forbairt hey that’s the idea of this page, to get interest in the event, find topics people want to hear and also gives people a chance to think about what they are going to talk about.

  13. daxroc

Topics on OSS and hardware security , maintaining, ids, best practices. Things not to do. softwares such as python, php, javascript ,apache, mysql to name a few.

  14. Andrea Magnorsky

I could do a talk on the castle project (castleproject.org) its an open source framework with MVC, IoC and ActiveRecord for .net if anyone is interested?

  15. Jennifer Farley

I could do a talk on “Bring out the Gimp – The open source alternative to Photoshop” with a little demonstration if people would find that helpful.

  16. admin

@Andrea your email to me sounds great can I add it here so folks will know what it’s about! Thanks

@Jennifer Oh I’d love that gimp is great if people can use it, I’m not one of those people but have seen the work it can do!

Monorail(MVC) and the Castle Project [Open Source .Net]

This session is a walk through of a sample application using Monorail, an MVC from castleproject.org. Monorail is an open source MVC framework.

The application will also use Active Record, an implementation of the active record pattern. Active Record works on top of NHibernate so the session will also contain some criteria building , as well as a quick look at using Windsor (Inversion of Control)

I offer to give a lecture about the Ubuntu Community.

UDS, on line communication, launchpad, and how the structure of the community works (users/MOTU/Core Team/Desktop/etc…).

    Anybody interested?

I’ve recently gotten android phone. I might be able to give a talk about android development, but I’d have to figure it out first, so put me down as a maybe.

“How to convince a Windows-based software house to switch to OSS alternatives”

That would be a big one for me. My employer’s products are server oriented and their old Windows based client software is slowly being ported over to the web. Now would seem like a good time to make to case to switch.

There are no technical or financial reasons to stick with Windows and we certainly aren’t nowhere big enough to have MS make us a financial offer we can’t refuse.

I find programming Windows a pain, it’s just weird and quirky. Linux programming a lot more straightforward to me and there is a plenty more support. More to the point, if a system call misbehaves I can look at the underying code and find out why – I can’t do that with closed source systems.

I know think I can offer a lecture about: “Working with/editing/ejoying video with Free Software”

    possible topics:
blender video editing (amazing, trust me) [blender.org]
    gstreamer cool tricks [gstreamer.freedesktop.org]
    freemix quick demo [freemix.forja.rediris.es]

    anyone interested?

how about a little something about linux certifications in Dublin/Ireland? where/how to get one and which one go for… that kind of stuff

  24. Colm O'Gairbhith

I’d like to talk about an open-source project which is being conceived if not yet born to design a carbon-footprint/energy/energy-cost tracker for both public and commercial use. The working prototype is on http://www.carbontracking.com/thetracker.htm but a huge amount of work awaits to be done by people with ruby-on-rails/javascript(jquery)/css/xml knowledge. Its carbon footprint 2.0 (hopefully), one step up from the plethora of mediocre calculators that exist already.

  25. Mark Frawley

I know the schedule is fixed, but if you guys are organising another of these I’d love to contribute to something on scalability using open source.

  26. admin

Thanks for all the great suggestions, but the timetable was full. I’ll have to consider running another barcamp just to hear more about these!
